Stirling Castle

Steeped in history, Stirling Castle dates back to the early 12th century. Several Scottish monarchs were crowned there, including Mary Queen of Scots in 1542, and it was one of the most-used royal residences in the country. Explore the rooms, gardens, tapestries, vaults and much more. Open seven days a week – advance booking recommended.

Old Town Jail

Throughout its history, the Old Town Jail has been a prison, military detention barracks and training centre for the Home Guard. Discover the history of crime and punishment in Stirling, experience a guided jail tour, or test your mettle in one of the escape rooms.

The National Wallace Monument

This famous landmark commemorates the spot where William Wallace led his troops to victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. As you climb the monument, you can explore various rooms to discover Wallace’s extraordinary story. At the top you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views across Scotland’s historic heartland.

Thistles Shopping Centre

Just five minutes’ walk from the hotel, Thistles is open seven days a week, with over 70 shops including fashion and beauty, homeware and technology. The centre also has a selection of cafes and coffee shops where you can take a well-earned break from shopping.

The Battle of Bannockburn

Explore the site of Robert the Bruce’s greatest victory and learn about a battle that changed the path of Scotland’s history. Witness a digital recreation of the battle, follow the footsteps of Robert the Bruce in the memorial park, and find out all about the roles that soldiers, knights and ordinary people played in the battle.

The Stirling Smith Art Gallery

Founded in 1874 on land provided by the burgh of Stirling, the gallery celebrates the rich history of Stirling, with exhibitions changing throughout the year. Regular guest speakers host talks on Scottish art, film, politics and more. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday.

Cambuskenneth Abbey

Nestled in the shadow of Stirling Castle is the lesser-known Cambuskenneth Abbey, founded in the 12th century by King David I. It’s a site of great historical interest, with Robert the Bruce holding parliament there in the 1300s, as well as the resting place of James III and his wife Queen Margaret.

Plean Country Park

A short drive from Stirling Highland Hotel, Plean Country Park has over 70 hectares of woodland and parkland which is open to the public all year round. It’s ideal for walking, cycling, horse riding, with marked walks, an orienteering course and a biodiversity trail.
